In this article, we are going to talk about one of the most powerful yet underrated SEO technique and that is internal backlinks. So what are these internal backlinks? How you can create on your website and how it boosts your SEO ranking.
Whenever we talk about backlinking, we always consider that it’s external backlinks. But we completely ignore the most powerful and the easiest way of creating backlinks is on the website itself and that is called the internal backlinks. So let’s first try to understand what are the benefits of creating this internal backlink.
Table of Contents
1. Easy For Search Engine To Know Your New Pages
Search engines know about your new pages so that they can crawl them easily. Because as you keep building the internal backlinks from one page to another,
once the search engine read one page they get to know a link to the new page so that they go ahead on that page and crawl that as well.
2. More Understandable For Search Engine
It helps search engine to understand what this page is all about So it depends on what keyword or key phrase you have used from page one to link to page two. And we will cover that later in this article.
So in order to create internal backlinks on your website, you can consider your website in form of a hierarchical structure where you have the homepage. Below that we have different categories, maybe you have a blog or an eCommerce website and under those categories, we have respective pages.
Now in order to build these internal backlinks, we can classify them into three categories which depend on where these internal backlinks is placed on the website.
So the number one is the best quality internal backlink which is placed on the very top. And by top I do not mean the main navigation menu, it is the main content body. So whenever you place a backlink for any page in the top of the content body, it gets the most weighted and considered as the best quality internal backlink.
And in the same way we have the medium as well as the least quality internal backlinks when we place that internal backlink in the middle or at the lower end of our content.
And now if we come back in this hierarchical structure again here from the home page, all the categories will get the best quality internal backlink. And in the same way all the subsequent pages under a specific category will get the best quality internal backlinks.
For example, all the pages under category one will get the best quality backlinks from category one to all the respective pages under this category.
In the same way, all the pages under category two will get the best quality internal backlinks from category two to all the subsequent pages listed under this category. And after that, all the categories will have medium-quality backlinks to each other.
And in the same way, all the pages under a specific category will share a medium-quality backlink. So all the pages under category one will share the medium quality backlinks.
But there will be no internal backlinking between the pages of category one and category two and so on. Which means that pages from a particular category will have no linking to the pages of different categories.
So if there is any backlink from page one to page two, it should always be under that same category. And if we take this structure in the reverse order, all the pages under a specific category will give internal backlinks to the route or the parent category as least quality internal backlinks so they can mention the link for the category may be somewhere at the bottom of the page.
And in the same way all the categories will give the least quality backlink back to the home page. And this will help the Google bots to read your website more efficiently and then help you rank better in search engines.
But the most important thing you need to understand here is that the phase or the key phrase you use to link page one to page two. And this is where your internal backlinking can hurt your external backlinking.
For example, we have page one and here we have written content focusing on keyword XYZ. And now you want to link page two somewhere on this page one and you are using the focus keyword XYZ and linking that to page two.
And this is absolutely wrong way you are actually passing all the weighted off on-page SEO of page one to the page two which might not
be targeting the XYZ as a target or focus keyword. And if you have done any external backlinking for page two which is not around the focus keyword XYZ then you’re going to confuse search engines.
That which page should I consider for the focus keyword XYZ either page one or page two. So make sure while you are building this internal backlinks you use the text for these links very wisely
so that you don’t transfer the on-page SEO benefits of page one to page two. So this is how you can build internal backlinks for your website and get the best out of on-page SEO.
So that’s it for this one and I’ll see you in the next one.
